The Allahabad High Court has ruled that a woman is entitled to maintenance from her father-in-law even after her husband's death, under specific conditions outlined in the Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act.
The Supreme Court of India has ruled that a widow is entitled to claim maintenance from her father-in-law's estate under Hindu law, regardless of when her husband died.
The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Law Commission to consider a plea as a representation of a Buddhist group that certain sets of personal Hindu laws, which are applicable to Buddhists also, are against their fundamental rights, including freedom to practice religion.
